Medion Akoya E1210 MSN 30008342 Windows Upgrade feasibility

I have been given a very old Medion Akoya E1210. I am trying to see if I can make some use of it (other than going online as it clearly cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 and Windows 10 support ends in October 2025). At present the operating system is Windows XP. My question is whether I can upgrade to Windows 7 or even higher? It does not have a very large hard drive so there are limitations as to what I can do.

Any advice very welcome

hi @morrig47

As Microsoft do not support Windows 7 or 8 any more I believe it will be hard to find an official version to install.

Only Win 7 32bit/Win 7 64bit/Win Vista 32bit/Win Vista 64bit/Win XP 32bit seem to be compatible as per drivers available on the Medion service website.

The unit is from around 2008

thanks

Yes  you could upgrade to Win 7; I do have an old  E1212. It has the same Mainboard MSI N0-11. Win 7 runs smooth and even faster than Win XP.

I would advise to exchange the 80 GB 2,5 HDD against a more modern and much faster 2.5 SSD. Saves a lot of battery usage, and runs much faster than the built-in HDD. Mind:  Keep the old HDD for safety.

I did also flash my E1212 with an MSI Bios (U100, V. EN011IMS.10G  I do think it was), and I added a  2x1000 MB DDR2 SO Dimm memory module which gave me 2 GB memory. But for this the built in 1000 MB DDR2 SO-Dimm memory module has to be swapped against the 2 - GB module; and Onboard Memory in Bios Page Advanced must be deactivated because the graphic card works with Shared Memory.

Or the screen stays blank, or  the PC  won't boot. And the AHCI mode must be enabled.

With the new bios one can switch into Turbo mode (Fn +F10), which gives a choice of 8, 15 or 24% OC in Bios settings. But for this you do need also the newest SCM driver. Alltogether with the SSD disk it really runs  fast.. Even my battery  is still quite good.

That reminds me, I have to do a battery refresh.

Cheers, daddle

Edit:

Hi daddle - my apologies for taking so long to reply to your very helpful posts. I have been struggling with the updates for Win 7 Pro and Office 2010 and even more so with Microsoft Security Essentials (not that I need this in the future and the device will always be offline). Eventually through sheer persistence I have got there. So many of the online links for updates were either wrong or out of date. I have also applied the updates from the Medion website. I am not that proficient with hardware changes, much more comfortable with software to be honest. I now have the device as I wanted a few days ago i.e with Win 7 and Office installed and working. Given my main device is an iMac and the Medion will be used very, very occasionally and never online I think I am happy to leave it as it is. Once again I can't thank enough for your very helpful advice in getting me over the line!

Just state the MSN number, or all numbers you find, on the  sticker on the bottom.  Sorry, you did already in Post 1. The MSN is 30008342..

I still have the bios, and the SCM files, but first  I have to check the details of your E1210.

Ich weiss nicht mehr wie das vor 15 Jahren ausssah, als ich das gemacht hatte.  Wenn nur der leere  Slott vorhanden ist , ist der Speicher onboard eingelötet.

I forgot to add the english translation:

It could also be that the 1 GB is permanently installed, but Medion states in the equipment list that there is a 1 GB SO-DIMM memory in the slot. But then deactivating the onboard memory after replacing the SO-DIMM wouldn't make sense. You'll see if an SO-DIMM is present when you open the device. Maybe the E1210 differs a little from the E1212.

I don't remember what it looked like 15 years ago when I did that. If there is only an empty slot, the memory is soldered in onboard.

Actually I feel a bit sorry you are  not  upgrading  Bios to the MSI 1.0G Version. Because it is so easy done.

I have  the two  files you need for upgrading: First the Bios 1.0G, and  second he SCM file newest Version for the U90/100.

The Step are: Flashing in Windows V. 10.G

Rebooting and then install  the new SCM driver.

The you can swap the SO-dimm against a 2 GB modul

During the next boot pres the Esc tab and enter Bios.

In the bios disable the Internal memory for  the graphics.. Save and reboot.

That's all.

And even much betteran faster if you replace the HDD against an SSD.

Make an Image before of your HDD with the now funktioning Win 7 installation.

The Imaging Program let you make a bootstick with the program on it; you will need this to reflash the image to the new drive.

Replace the HDD against a 2.5" Notebook SSD. 256 GB will be more than sufficient

Reboot with the before made Bootstick, and reflash your image to the new drive.

With 2 GB Memory and the turbo  mode with 24% faster CPU clock, it really boots fast and runs very  easily.

Now I have  a question, in which I do need your experience. I still do have an unused Office 10 license (In earlier times I bougt a three fold license; one is stiil unused)

I now tried to install it on an spare older PC, but Microssoft  refuses to activate the installation, claiming that Office 10 is too old.
How did you manage to get your old Office activated?

Cheers, daddle
