Firmware

Definition

The firmware of a device is software that manages the basic functions. The hardware receives instructions and information from the firmware on how to process inputs from other software or hardware. It serves as a central interface for communication between hardware, software and user.

Unlike regular software, firmware is hard-wired into the hardware by means of a chip, and in special cases gives the ability to make changes to the way the hardware operates. In most cases, the firmware of a device can be replaced or updated only with special tools or software.

Failed firmware updates usually lead to hardware failures. A firmware update should be performed with the utmost caution. A backup of personal data and the previous firmware should be made in advance, if possible.
