An interface is required whenever two different or identical but separate systems or devices are working together.
An interface manages the flow of data and the way in which this data is transferred between two systems. Often, but not always, this requires an input device.
Interfaces can take many different forms and can be either hardware or software. A power connector is the interface between device and electricity, a firmware is the interface between hardware and software.
Interfaces between user and devices are also known as graphical user interfaces (GUI).
