NFS (Network File System)

NFS (Network File System)

Definition

The Network File System (NFS)- is a protocol that enables access to files via a network. Files are not transferred as with FTP, for example, but users can access files located on a remote computer as if they were stored on their local hard disc.

NFS works on the network protocol IP originally together with stateless UDP. In the meantime, however, there is also NFS via TCP. NFSv4 only works with TCP and only requires one port (2049), which makes it easier to operate through firewalls.
