HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)

HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)

Definition

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection is an encryption system intended for the DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces for the protected transmission of audio and video data. HDCP is one of the requirements for playing Blu-ray Discs or HD DVDs, for example.

Whether HDCP encryption is necessary is determined by the content to be played. If the playing device requires an HDCP connection, the playing component (e.g. TV set or projector) must also support HDCP in order to display the content.

HDCP is intended to prevent tapping of the video and audio material within the connection between the sender and receiver.
