I know for IT professionals this is old hat, but for the average home user this may be unknown. For some time now, MS (Microsoft) has been advising people to stop using SMBv1.0/CIFS as its nearly 30 years old and has major security vulnerabilities. This was very recently highlighted with the ransomware WannCry crypt that has caused great chaos around the world! Windows 10 still includes the option for SMBv1 because legacy devices that don’t have later versions need it to communicate fully, so it’s still there and quite possibly active on your computer! The reason I’ve posted this here in the Networking/NAS forum is that there’s a good chance your NAS is using SMBv1 to talk to your windows computer, so you need to adjust both your computer(s) and your NAS to only run on the later versions of SMB To turnoff / check that SMBv1 is not being used in your computer. Windows 10 > Control Panel > Programs and features > Turn Windows features on or off (top left under heading) > SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support > "untick" > OK > ReBoot After doing that you may find the direct links to your NAS no longer work, this means your NAS is set to only use SMBv1 – not good.   Synology NAS units have the option To turnoff /check that SMBv1.0 is not active on your Synology* and enable later versions of SMB; Synology DSM > Main Menu > Control Panel > File Services > Advanced Settings > “Change Max SMB protocol from SMB1 to SMB3” “Change Minimum SMB protocol to SMB2 or higher” (don't do this if you know you have a legacy device that needs it*) Select Apply   *Other NAS’s will have something simular   But I havnt found it on the Medion Nas.................... Please firmware update or work around  --------------- Added: *When you turn off SMBv1.0/CIFS on your NAS, you may find another device that accesses the NAS stops connecting – check that devices setting to see if it also has its max protocol set to SMB1 and change if possible. If it has no settings at all, then you have no choice other than treat it as a legacy device that only runs SMB1 and change your NAS minimum SMB protocol to back to the less secure SMB1 WDTV Live media player appears to be one that only uses SMB1   Any help as I wish to go back to SMbv2/3 for security   ...
