LANs (Local Area Network) are connections between computers, PCs and other electrical devices such as servers, TVs, receivers and household electronics to form a data network. These networks are restricted to a limited area. The term is derived from "local" and refers to the number of possible participants and the physical limitation of area. The institution IEEE has standardized the structure of such networks with standard IEEE 802.
They are used by companies, private individuals/households and associations to share information and access the Internet. Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) allows the usage wirelessly.
