Definition

A processor socket provides the connection between a computer processor (CPU) and a mainboard (motherboard). Current processor sockets have more than a thousand metal pins as contact points through which data and power are transferred between the processor and the motherboard.

Intel Socket 1151 (LGA)

Motherboards used in PCs usually have sockets in the LGA design, which makes it easy to replace a CPU.

In mobile devices, such as notebooks, sockets with BGA connection are often used. CPUs in this design are soldered to the socket and therefore cannot be replaced.
