IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor)

IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor)

Definition

An integrated graphics processor performs the same tasks as a separate graphics card. However, it is installed directly in the chip case of a CPU, which has the following advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages

  • Low power consumption
  • Does not need its own memory
  • Systems with IGP can be produced cheaply
  • Does not need its own cooling system, but is cooled with the CPU

Disadvantages

  • An IGP can't be replaced separately in case of a defect
  • Integrated GPUs usually don't have their own memory, but use the system's main memory instead
  • An IGP makes the CPU more expensive for users of separate graphics hardware
  • The 3D graphics performance of IGPs is not sufficient for high-end gaming
