When I try to start the laptop, the HDD and WLAN lights come on, I hear the fan go on/off, then the HDD light goes off, the HDD can still be heard rotating, and that's it. The first few times it did this, I could shut it down by holding the start button down for 4 seconds, then try again and it would start. Now, nothing. No beeps, no display. I've tried the HDD in a caddy and it seems to be ok as I can access files. All suggestions up to and including throw it off a cliff would be most welcome.

Thanks for the reply Bart and my apologies for taking so long to respond. The laptop's been on the back burner due to lack of time. I'd already seen the Russian gentleman expressing his disgust (?) at how deeply buried the CMOS battery was. I eventually extracted it using a small pair of pliers, but replacing the battery didn't solve the problem, which I'll raise in a separate thread.

Can anybody tell me how to get the CMOS battery out? I can see it, but can't extract it. Do I need to split the case apart to extract it? thanks
