Definition

A Trojan horse (Trojan) is a seemingly useful program that covertly performs other/harmful operations in the background and belongs to the group of malware .

The malicious function (e.g.: theft of data/passwords/information) may persist even after its host program has been uninstalled.

Its name is inspired by the Battle of Troy, where a supposed gift led to the fall of city of Troy.
