IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor)
Definition
An integrated graphics processor performs the same tasks as a separate graphics card. However, it is installed directly in the chip case of a CPU, which has the following advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages
- Low power consumption
- Does not need its own memory
- Systems with IGP can be produced cheaply
- Does not need its own cooling system, but is cooled with the CPU
Disadvantages
- An IGP can't be replaced separately in case of a defect
- Integrated GPUs usually don't have their own memory, but use the system's main memory instead
- An IGP makes the CPU more expensive for users of separate graphics hardware
- The 3D graphics performance of IGPs is not sufficient for high-end gaming
