eSATAp (External Power over Serial ATA)

eSATAp (External Power over Serial ATA)

Definition

In computing, eSATAp (also known as Power over eSATA, Power eSATA, eSATA / USB Combo, eSATA USB Hybrid Port / EUHP) is a combined port for external storage devices. An eSATA or USB device can be plugged into an eSATAp port. The socket is cut out for both types of devices to ensure that a plug can only be inserted in the correct way.

However, eSATA use requires an additional power supply (e.g. Power over USB). Corresponding cards with eSATAp slots are also offered. With Power eSATA, the hardware manufacturer MSI tries to solve the problem of the missing power supply. With this modified eSATA connector, part of the USB technology for the power supply was built into the eSATA connector.

There is also the eSATApD extension from hardware manufacturer Delock, which uses 12 V in addition to 5 V and thus also allows the operation of 3.5″ hard drives without an additional power supply.

USB devices can usually also be connected to an eSATAp socket, which is indicated by a corresponding logo.
