WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model)

WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model)

Definition

Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) is a driver architecture for graphics card drivers in Windows versions from Windows Vista onwards.

WDDM is supposed to increase the graphics performance, as well as provide for a higher stability of graphics applications. Errors in the display drivers can be repaired by WDDM on the part of the system without a reboot being necessary. In addition, WDDM enables multitasking of the graphics processor, which means that several graphics-intensive applications can be run simultaneously.

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, there was the option for graphics card drivers to use either WDDM or previous versions. Since Windows 8, this option is no longer available, and graphics card drivers have to be WDDM-based.
