Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Definition

The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) and its predecessor Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) describe the central interface between the firmware, the individual components of a computer and the operating system.
It sits logically below the operating system and is the successor to the PC BIOS, focussing on 64-bit systems. One component of current UEFI versions is Secure Boot, which restricts booting to previously signed boot loaders and should therefore prevent malware or other unwanted programmes from starting.
