JEDEC (Solid State Technology Association)

Definition

The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC for short) is a US organization for the standardization of semiconductors. It was formerly called the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council.

JEDEC was a member of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), which was dissolved in 2010, and itself has more than 300 semiconductor manufacturers as members.

JEDEC has taken on a wide variety of diverse tasks, including:

  • Standardization of certain random access memory (RAM) devices for computers, such as SDRAM or DDR SDRAM.
  • Standardization of physical and logical digital interfaces of electronic circuits and assemblies
  • Standardization of package shapes for electronic components
  • Quality standards with test specifications
  • Standardization for new lead-free production technologies (see RoHS guidelines)
  • JEDEX sales shows for electronics manufacturers
  • Standardization for solid state drives
