Fibre Channel

Fibre Channel

Definition

Fibre Channel (FC) is a standard interface from the field of storage networks.

Similar to classic networks where each network card has a MAC address, with Fibre Channel each device has a WWNN (World Wide Node Name) as well as each port per device has a WWPN (World Wide Port Name). This is a 64-bit value (usually represented in hexadecimal) that uniquely identifies each Fibre Channel device. Fibre Channel devices can have more than one port, in which case the device still has only one WWNN, but it has WWPN in the same number as it has ports. The WWNN and the WWPN are usually very similar.
