Why does the installed hard drive make noises and how do I check it for possible errors?

Answer

Hard drives contain mechanical components, such as rapidly rotating metal platters and moving read and write heads, which can cause noises such as whirring, creaking, clicking and clacking during normal operation.

If unusual noises occur in connection with hard drive errors when restarting or errors when reading and writing data, we recommend that you first check the hard drive using the operating system:

• Press and hold the Windows key + r at the same time.
• Enter CMD in the window that appears.
• Confirm with the Enter key.
• Enter wmic diskdrive get caption, status in the prompt that now opens.
• Confirm again with the Enter key .

The displayed result lists the available disks and their status. If this is not OK, we recommend downloading diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer's website (see below) and checking the hard drive with it.
