Medion P6705 chassis replacements

Hello,

So it appears my Medion P6705 (MD61366) is beginning to fall apart. The 1st issue is on the back cover, some of the screw holes at the top that go into the hinge have failed. The screw goes in, but doesn't stick, so even if it's screwed in, the back cover is still loose in that area. The material that's supposed to hold the screws has broken off.

The 2nd issue is on one side, the hinge no longer screws down because the plastic mounts have broken. So I'm basically in search for chassis replacements. I've looked on the Medion spare parts page and can see some chassis replacements. However, there's no picture for the parts.

What parts do I actually need? Bottom cover and bottom case? I want to make sure before I buy because there's no picture to see if it's actually the part I need.

So I've been managing with bodge fixes all this time (just kept applying glue to the screw inserts) which works as a temporary fix, but always breaks again. I really need to replace the broken chassis parts.

The screen side is OK (both the screen itself and the screen back cover). What I need is the top case (where the main board and all other boards sit) and then the bottom case (that covers the motherboard).

I've looked on the spare parts website and see

NBC TOP CASE CLE N857EK1-M and NBC BOTTOM CASE CLE N857EK1-M - are these two the parts I need?

I don't know the MSN of my laptop model. The site doesn't seem to list any UK versions.

Hi @Ezenia

Medion MSN 40068485

Clevo Part No. 6-39-N8572-E10-M1

NBC BOTTOM CASE CLE N857EK1-M

The Bottom Case can be obtained from a third-party supplier, but unfortunately, they don't seem to ship to the UK.

Have you ever tried to repair it with a hot glue gun or two-component epoxy resin?

bye Fishtown

I've mainly been using hot glue to get the screw inserts to sit without moving which works, but only temporary. The act of opening/closing the lid eventually wears out the glue and the screw inserts start moving again. I'm guessing the heat from the laptop doesn't help either and probably weakens it over time (heatsinks are pretty close to the hinge area). This laptop runs pretty hot (even with PTM7950 and an undervolted CPU/GPU). I can maybe get a few weeks/months out of it before I see it needs re-doing again.

It doesn't help that the bottom case screw holes for the hinges are broken as well. On one side I've managed to get a nut inside and use hot glue to secure the nut in place which keeps that side from lifting when opening the laptop lid. However, even this eventually fails. The glue weakens and I find the nut is no longer secure. The other side has more extensive damage. The hole is bigger and I unfortunately don't have a sufficient nut on hand that fits perfectly inside so it can be glued. I used a screw with a larger head to get around this briefly, but this seems to not be working as good any more. The hole seems to have become slightly bigger than the screw head so that screw comes out without much effort.

I've just done the fix again and it's holding for now, but it's not going to last. Maybe I'm using low-quality glue sticks or whatever, not really sure. I use a combination of a cheap hot glue gun (it's some 10w one) and then use my hot air rework station to add more heat to the area.

While it does work for a bit, these fixes aren't strong enough to withstand the force of the hinges over time. Real fix is just replacing the two cases. Problem is they're hard to find and are a bit pricey as well. Feels like a waste buying an entirely new laptop when it's working perfectly fine, failure is just a mechanical issue. I've just been managing with these bodge fixes for now, but it's not really a long-term solution. I can see damage being done to the upper case likely from the force of the hinges coming up when the fix fails to hold it in place.

More damage is being done to the laptop cases on the right side. I think the main problem is the screw hole in the bottom case cover has enlarged too much that no appropriate screw head fits into it to keep it secured down. Seems like I'd need something like an M2.5/M.3 screw but with bigger heads than normal so it'll fit into the hole on the bottom case and help keep it secured.

I tried contacting Medion about the required spare parts for this laptop, but as of yet have received no response from them. So it's not looking hopeful that I'll be able to properly replace the damaged parts. It's frustrating because the laptop itself works perfectly fine (electrically anyway) but has damaged to its chassis that will eventually make it unusable as a laptop. Feels like such a waste to throw the laptop away and get a new one for an issue like this.

With this prosthetic resin(actually it is a "Methyl methacrylate", you can repair almost anything. It bonds to a wide variety of materials, is very hard and strong, and can definitely withstand the forces exerted by the joints. This requires that there are sufficiently strong structures in the area. One disadvantage is the color, "gum pink" or "Clear" which mainly appears a little bit grayish. It's easy to work with:

Mix the cold-curing powder with the liquid, let it swell for a moment, then apply it with a spatula and lightly shape it.

After about a couple of minutes it hardens completely.

It  then can be trimmed and sanded to size with a Dremel, and also polished.

This is the cheapest seller. But I don't know if  they ship to UK.

But it should be available with dental suppliers in UK as well..

Or ask your Dentist or a Dental technology laboratory for a speciman.

Cheers, daddle
