Wer weiß was Genaues?

Installation hints for WLAN driver installation on MEDION P2120D under Linux Mint 17.3

Currently (April 1, 2016), the LINUX MINT 17.3 distribution lacks a WiFi driver for the MEDION desktop P2120D. The WLAN interface of this computer happens to be a REALTEK RTL8821AU. There are quite a few drivers found at GITHUB but only one of them seems to work properly on my P2110D. I'm uncertain about the official release state of this driver, maybe its only beta, but I'm lucky that it works with me.

As long as this driver is not integrated in the MINT 17.3 distro, we have to install it ourselves from the source. Following the below receipe, things are pretty straightforward on a freshly installed MINT 17.3 (even for dummies like me):

1. Open a console terminal and install the necessary tools which are not part of the

initial installation (thanks to Daniel Scrivano and JensenScandinavia Inc. for the hints), i.e.:

    > sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git

2. Download the source from Github:

    > git clone https://github.com/fredy72/rtl8821au.git

3. This creates a new folder named "rtl8821au" containing the source of the driver.

Enter that directory:

    > cd rtl8821au

and build the loadable driver module "8821au.ko":

    > make

4. Finally  the module needs to be installed regularly in the system:

   > sudo make install

5. Of course one could now issue some more commands to load the module into the kernel but I found it easier and more reliable to reboot the system. After reboot, "8821au" should be present in the kernel (call "lsmod" to check the loaded modules and "ifconfig" to see "wlan0" alive). Now you may enable and configure WiFi as usual (SSID, WPA key etc.)

6. CAUTION: The driver tends to disconnect sporadically and reconnect within a few seconds. So far, this didn't cause any problems.

Hallo,

@tispmarg

Edit:

Ich korrigiere meine Aussage, verbaut ist der RTL8221AU

@mic

Vielen Dank für die Antwort. Also der rtl8221au.

@mic

Hier ist die vorläufige Lösung:

1) den von mic genannten WLAN Chip @rtl8221au

// Da ging was schief. Wurde gesendet bevor es fertig war. Im nächsten Beitrag steht es richtig.

@mic

    idVendor 0x0bda (d.i. Realtek, ok)
    idProduct 0x0823
