IEEE 802 Standard

IEEE 802 Standard

Definition

The IEEE 802 project of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has been concerned with the standardization of local networks since the 1980s. The purpose of these standards is to ensure that not every manufacturer of network-capable hardware develops different interfaces.

For this purpose, various sub-projects and working groups have been formed to deal with the various topics of a network connection. In addition to numerous projects for standardizing data security and also the way in which data is transferred in data networks, the best-known projects are:

IEEE 802.3

Ethernet - wired networks
IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN
